  6.  @steadmanuhlich6734  Good question man. When the round is fired the battery sends 'shot, over' and the observer replies 'shot, out'. When the round is five seconds to impact the battery will give 'splash, over' to which the observer replies 'splash, out'. Shot is to let the FO know the round has been fired and splash is for them to get ready to observe, especially in the event they're having to take cover and can't keep eyes on target at all times.

  9.  @DavidOfWhitehills  Both are in use. Easier to use time for smoke and illum than getting it just right for a burst of HE above troops. Often a variable time (prox) fuse is used there.

  11.  @keithgraver5482  generally a circular pattern is correct, dispersion can vary a bit depending on height of burst and range. We use a rectangle for planning purposes but the actual dispersion isn’t quite as neat as that.
