The ecological effects of dams are local. With a giant river like the Nile the impact of the dam 100 miles downstream is minimal.

@padox95 Dams don't delete water. If they want to extract electricity from it they need to let the water flow down. No flow equals no electricity. What removes water are irrigations which redirect water in the river into farm fields. So no if the water flow is reduce the reason is irrigation not the dam.

If there is a scientific paper that paper is flawed blaming dams without properly testing alternative reason like irrigation. Also point me to this paper that has conclusively proven that dams not irrigation is the cause of decrease river flow.

@johnsamuel1999 The flow of water is determine by the slope of the river. Dams does not change the slope of the river. The other way to affect the flow is to remove significant amount of water like redirecting them to irrigate farms. The effects of dams are local such as slowing the flow in the reservoir forming sediments but the flow will speed up again once the water is past the dam obstruction. The flow will naturally speed up until it reach the speed determine by the slope after that the river flow will behave like the dam was never there.

@joeblogs6598 Again this sediment formation is local. The flow slows down at the dam reservoir but once past the dam the water flow speeds up again because the flow is determine by the slope. But now the sediment has been deposited at the reservoir so the water exiting the dam has less sediment so the dam actually reduce sediment formation downstream and the water flows even faster.

@Z0mb13ta11ahase Yes dams are use for storing energy but the effect it does is just even out the seasonal variation of water flow. Dry season has heavier ecological impact than dams refilling reservoir.

pi hermoso It is actually very hard to throw stuff into the sun. Orbits that crosses the sun requires the most amount of energy. It requires far more energy than escaping the solar system.

Evaporation happens whether on reservoir or on the river itself. So to answer your question the evaporation effect is surface area of the reservoir divided by the total surface area of the entire river. For the Nile that is a surface area of a river that crosses several nations.

The solution is to overbuild renewables. Rethink X has calculated that building 5X more solar than what is needed for the summer months is enough to supply the needed electricity for the winter months. Batteries are only needed to time shift the Solar's daily production. If Wind is added into the mix this reduces the need for batteries even more.

@JohnnyAngel8 I know that is why I insist that irrigation is the reason for majority of the ecological impact not the dam itself. Irrigation removes water redirecting the water into the farm fields. Dams on the other hand are just obstructions that has local effects.

@Matt-kt9nm The reservoir is filled by smoothing out the seasonal variation that happens every year. This is why it takes several years for this to complete. Dams use to generate electricity needs the water flowing to produce electricity. Constant electricity demand means constant water flow and increase electricity demand needs increase water flow. This is of course different if the intended use for the water is irrigation. In that situation reducing water flow so that it can be redirected to farm fields will have large ecological impact downstream.

@travis2893 Again with scientific nonsense. The amount of energy absorb is proportional to the surface area expose to the sun. The entire surface area of the Nile river is order of magnitude larger than the surface area of the reservoir. By the time the water reach Egypt it has absorb more heat energy from their journey to Egypt than the heat energy they absorb flowing through the reservoir. If you are worried of the water heating up then roof up the entire Nile river.

@dozerboyd8784 I am angry because people are misusing scientific principles to reach misleading conclusions. Yes the surface area increase when the reservoir is built but the amount it increases is negligible. Increasing by a factor of 1.001 is almost no increase at all.

@Justin B Then you are simply wrong. If the water does not disappear then the flow must be the same. Do you think the dam has some magical property to stop rain falling from the sky? The dam is an insignificant zone compared to the total area that received rainfall annually and this water coming from the sky must flow to the sea or get used by plants animals and humans. Dams don't use water to live. This is why if there is a reduction in flow then the culprit is irrigation. Irrigation used water to grow plants. Irrigation also increases the surface area that water can evaporate. Farm fields are orders of magnitude larger in area than dam reservoir.

@migBdk Nuclear is very bad fit for renewables. Nuclear is as slow as coal in responding to dynamic load which will increase due to the intermittency of renewables. Nuclear will have very bad profitability in the coming decades because renewables will force nuclear plants to very low capacity factor. Ironically nuclear plants will need a lot of energy storage to operate in a grid the is dominated by renewables. In the end 5x renewables + battery storage will be cheaper than coal, gas or nuclear.

@migBdk Yes they will need them. Because solar can always undercut them when the sun is shining and wind will undercut them when the wind is blowing. Being limited to only be able to sell electricity when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing severely limits their ROI. To be profitable they need storage to store their produce electricity when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing and then sell them later when there is no sun and there is no wind. Even today you see renewable operator sometimes sell electricity at negative prices because it is cheaper for them to do that than curtail their electricity production. Nuclear have no way in competing when renewables are wiling to sell at negative.

The only way to solve a housing crisis is to build more houses. It is supply and demand. If there are more houses constructed than there are demand the prices will fall.

@s.flanders The high price solves the issue of who wants to build houses. What is needed is to remove all obstacle that prevents those who want to build house from building houses. If this is not enough then the government should finance construction of affordable houses. But if the government finances house construction they need to sell this houses at least break even or at a small profit to make house building sustainable and they can roll the money earn from selling houses into building more affordable houses. For example if the government allocates a budget to build 100 houses and they sold the houses at 10% above cost then once they sold all 100 houses the government now earned enough money to finance building another 110 houses. Repeat the process and then they will gain enough money to build 121 houses and have sold 210 houses. Even selling at break even they can just keep rolling the money to build and sell 100 houses every cycle.

@s.flanders Affordability rely heavily on design and construction techniques. If the intention is to build affordable homes it is possible to build them. There are examples of soviet style low cost high density apartment buildings so it can be done. Now the scalper problem can be solve by prioritizing sells to people that don't own a home. Also if the difference in price is to high then it would make sense to add small profit instead of selling break even so that each cycle will have an increasing number of houses being constructed. The scalper problem will not completely disappear until there are more houses constructed than there is demand. So a small profit to create an exponential growth of construction for affordable home is needed.
