@Validole We need an understanding of quantum tunneling to even imagine the existence of charge trap material. I doubt we will discover this property randomly without knowledge of quantum effects. You need the material to be nanometers thin to enable tunneling then you need to expose it with high voltage then measure the charge level before an after exposure to discover the charge trap effect.

@TechnoMinarchist flash memory is impossible without quantum tunneling.

@metatron5199 Charge trap was invented from floating gate transistor. You need to invent the device itself before you can discover the effect. There is no way you accidentally fabricate a floating gate transistor it is a transistor with two gates stacked on top of its other and then accidentally replace that middle floating gate with charge trap material.

@metatron5199 You are claiming the opposite of what happen in history and then claim that your fantasy is the correct event and not reality. The reality is that the charge trap effect was discovered because Engineers understand Quantum tunneling and they specifically invented a device to exploit it. Then they again reinvented the device with better materials based on their understanding of quantum effects.

@metatron5199 Yes it is impossible to discover an effect which needs a specific device to appear. You need to first invent a floating gate transistor. To build this you need to first make a transistor then cover the first gate with a thin insulator then build a second gate on top of the first gate. This is a deliberate action that does not happen by accident and there is no reason to build such a device unless you know about quantum tunneling and you intend to trap charges on the floating gate. Then after that you need to invent a second device. The weakness with floating gates is that it is easy for a charge to tunnel in and easy to tunnel out. But for storage you need something that is easy to tunnel in but hard to tunnel out. Charge trap material is specifically a material that is easy to tunnel in and hard to tunnel out. Engineers need the complete understanding of quantum effects to design this type of material. The chance of someone inventing the first device without knowledge of quantum effects is already close to zero. The chance that someone invents the charge trap material of the second device without quantum knowledge is zero. The charge trap material has two counteracting features that won't normally appear in common materials. It can only exist on exotic metamaterials. Meta materials are materials designed to produce specific effects based on the underlying physical laws that are not normally exhibited with normal materials. You are wrong no matter how much you repeat "trust me bro" will not change the fact that you are wrong.

@metatron5199 It is impossible to discover charge trap effect without the understanding of quantum tunneling. To discover the charge trap effect you first need to invent the device called floating gate transistor. To do this you need to make the transistor cover the first gate with a very thin insulator and then make a second gate on top of it. This is a deliberate action there is no reason why someone would build a device like this unless they know about quantum tunneling and they are exploiting the mechanism to build a storage device. Then after inventing the first device you then follow up and invent a second device. The weakness of floating gate is that a charge is easy to tunnel in and easy to tunnel out. For a storage device you need a material that is easy for a charge to tunnel in and hard to tunnel out. This is a charge trap material. Something that is easy for a charge to tunnel in but hard to tunnel out. Materials like this are not natural it needs to be designed by an engineer that knows completely the mechanics of quantum tunneling. A material designed to exhibit an effect based on an underlying physics principle that does not occur naturally is called a metamaterial. The parameters of a charge trap material are very specific to achieve the conflicting effect of easy in but hard out. It will not be discovered randomly without the understanding of quantum tunneling to guide the engineer in how such a material can be built.

@alanunruh7310 My example showed knowledge on quantum tunneling is what makes it possible to store pictures in your iPhone. History did not have an iPhone.

@mathman0569 We are nowhere near transistor dimensions that makes tunneling to be an unsolvable problem. Yes engineers need to factor it when designing microchips but it's only a factor of consideration not a show stopper.

@mathman0569 There is still plenty of room to go smaller. The reason why nanometers does not mean anything is because marketing has taken over process naming. Yes there is an issue with scaling down but it is because of a different effect. The issue is that electrical properties do not scale in lockstep with dimension anymore. So shrinking dimensions do not improve impedance as much . Because impedance does not improve. Power and heat becomes a big problem.
