Long term also means he is willing to lose a lot of money affront to reap large profit down the road. He knows America is divided 50/50 so going centrist maximizes profit.

Most of Elon's wealth are tied with Tesla and Tesla shareholders are the only group of people who has leverage against Elon. If Tesla shareholder sells Elon's net worth drops significantly.
