  3. We know heating is a problem that is why they opened up the end plate to get oil in. So there must be significant heating losses happening in the rotor near the magnets. Otherwise it would be much easier to fabricate the rotor all sealed up.

  5. That's the aluminum end plate of a squirrel cage. They need it thick to handle the current load. And yes the indentation looks like it is for balancing.

  6. Harder to fabricate. They went with a straight squirrel cage on the induction motor for the same reason. Straight channels are easier to manufacture.

  7. I assume they did something to the metallurgy of the permanent magnet. That would be a low hanging fruit. Tweak the silicon content or add some exotic element and bam eddy current is reduced significantly.

  8. The induction motor is noisier you have coil whine on the stator and the rotor while PM motors only have coils on the stator.
