Russia can probably win this but probably more like the way they were eventually able to subdue Finland: long bloody and full of catastrophe for Russia. Russia clearly wasn’t ready for this
19
It’s hard to see the west providing large quantities of heavy equipment to Ukraine. But it’s hard to see this war ending in a way that’s satisfactory either for the west or Russia otherwise. If Mr. Biden and the Europeans want to solve this problem and stop Russia from continuing to pose a threat to world stability they have to do whatever it takes to force Russia out of all Ukrainian territory.

@РемиБоняшки Ukraine is acting more like Greece or Finland at the beginning of the war. And that means thousands of Russian body bags coming back.
4
A lot of the analysis seems reasonably accurate, but did the Russians really send their best? If so they haven’t been anywhere near as good as predicted and their ability to control the battlefield with superior electronics intelligence gathering and reconnaissance hasn’t panned out near so well as predicted. They haven’t even been able to establish the kind of dominance of the air predicted. But most surprisingly perhaps is the incompetence of the Russians in such basic things as concealing their vehicles and preventing them from getting bunched together stalled on a highway as perfect targets. The Russians have taken territory but it looks like they’re stuck in a quagmire that they can never get out of given the determination of the Ukrainians.

Perhaps not so many cameras and less willingness to reveal capabilities publicly
2
@РемиБоняшки Both countries preserved most of their territory at the end of the war and their sovereignty. The invasions clearly weren’t worth the invaders’ losses. Today Finland is once again a thorn in Russia’s side and will probably be part of NATO soon. In the long run this latest invasion isn’t going to make Russia stronger. It’s going to turn Russia into an international pariah and make Europe more unified against it.
2
@РемиБоняшки Interesting how quick you are to disclaim Russian nationality. I would too even if it wasn’t true under the circumstances, Which brings us back to my point: If Russia is willing to sink enough blood and treasure in this over enough time they can probably achieve some kind of victory but will it be worth the cost in men, money and in becoming an international outcast? That’s pretty doubtful.

@arty5876 Well I don’t suppose anyone here has as much information as do Russian and Ukrainian field commanders. But just what information has been released suggests this is not going according to Putin’s plan. US intelligence reporting that some Russian troops refused to even fight is shocking as are the stalling of Russian vehicles because they ran out of gas, and the high casualties of the Russians have already taken. The Ukrainians are showing no signs of laying down their weapons. This conjures up the image of a boy who stumbled into a hornets nest. The boy appears to be Putin.

@starchild692 I don’t think the west is willing to compromise on an unprovoked war of conquest. That can only mean that Russia gets to keep some territory that it stole rewarding Russian aggression. And I think that western leaders know why that can’t be tolerated. It would be appeasing Hitler again. And I think they know that that’s why the only way this gets resolved is by completely reversing Russian actions: all of them. Vladimir Putin has been foolish but he’s not crazy. He won’t use nuclear weapons so long as legitimately Russian territory is left untouched.
1
@AW-zk5qb Until very recently I would’ve agreed with you.
1
@starchild692 Meeting halfway still means giving Russia some territory that it took through naked, unprovoked aggression. That’s morally wrong no matter how you try to rationalize it. And it also rewards aggression ensuring more aggression. Your confidence that Russia wouldn’t threaten other European countries is already belied by the fact that they’re threatening nuclear attack if Finland or Sweden joins NATO. No country can be allowed to deny the sovereign rights of another to join whatever alliance it likes. It’s not acceptable to say that I feel threatened by somebody’s alliance when they haven’t actually made any aggressive move towards me and if that somehow gives me a ride to attack them with force. This cannot be allowed to stand or only more trouble will follow.
1
@starchild692 No you’re just rationalizing evil, false equivalency, and the kind of moral hazard that only leads to more and bloodier war through appeasement. Your prescription makes no sense on either moral logical or practical grounds. It result of nothing but evil consequences for everyone. You’re trying to normalize Putin’s uniquely appalling behavior and pull a Naville Chamberlain impression at the same time which is quite a feat

@ivanbadaev6621 Which cities have actually been taken or even completely cut off like Leningrad during World War II? That sounds like propagandistic exaggeration to me.
1
@РемиБоняшки I suppose whether or not Europe will be United depends on how you define Europe. But I would say that if you leave russia out you’re going to see a lot more unity now and going forward than you did before
1
@РемиБоняшки 30,000 in all of 1939. How many more did they lose by the end of the war? Russia’s already lost more troops than we did in our entire occupation of Afghanistan. Oh so you’re ethnic Russian, you just don’t live in Russia? Yeah I wouldn’t be admitting Russian nationality either. I think there’s a special place in hell reserved for people who suffered something that they then mete out on someone else, an unprovoked invasion in this case.
1
@ivanbadaev6621 None of those cities have been confirmed under Russian control by the Ukrainian government. And the way the Russian regime lies there’s absolutely no reason for anyone to take their claims at face value. The only thing you should take at face value from a Russian is if he tells you he’s going to die. That is indeed happening a lot right now.

@ivanbadaev6621 With the perspective of an intelligence officer, combat commander and Historian, our general Petraeus gets it right: https://youtu.be/_mDgH3dTR4w

@РемиБоняшки How would you know what our losses were in Afghanistan? I wouldn’t question them. Our military is less dominated by propaganda. Our society doesn’t allow hiding or falsely reporting death tolls so easily. US military medical care and the value that we place on human life is also totally different from that of Russia.

@РемиБоняшки It’s true that an unusually large number of Americans have bought into propaganda from a demagogue gangster and that has cheapened and damaged our political discourse. We are at a relative low point in Americans knowledge of and confidence in the truth. But we’re still a far cry from the nonstop state propaganda and oppression that comes from the Russian government. At least we don’t have a thoroughly institutionalized regime of nothing but propaganda in our government, the way Russia does. And we all know what happens to people who say things against the Regime in Russia. No wonder: the Russian president is a professional liar with no moral compass and no compunction about killing anyone who gets in his way.
1
@РемиБоняшки You always kill civilians when you use AirPower. We didn’t intentionally target civilians. No I don’t just go by what mainstream media says. I read more specialized media and also books and I have an MA in history
1
@РемиБоняшки I don’t think that it’s quite right to call the American government a “regime.” We still have a semblance of a republic.
