BLT It's only 1000 rpm down on 458 so it's not as it's a very big different and on very rare occasions do people rev out their engines to max, be it in an every day car or a sports car. And one would think such a super sports car is so much more than sound alone to be compared to tuned cars. 488 is not just about speed and 1000 rpm less is not that noticeable. I would say their clever system of increasing torque by every gear is a great way of removing the turbo charging effect you find in it's rivals with max torque at 1500 or so. Also the change that has caused some complain about the sound is due to turbo charging. What Forced Ferrari to go turbo is not emissions in first hand but the unfair competition. While Ferrari was building world class NA engines (Speciale has world's highest hp/L output than any other NA engine in a sports car) and getting to the limits all the competition had to do was to add ever bigger turbos on their engines to beat Ferrari. You say speed is not important but just read these pages were Mclaren and their fans happily say 12C or 650S are faster than their Ferrari counterparts. Even Corvette fans are getting bold enough to say such things. So despite making better cars Ferrari was forced to jump on the turbo wagon. Complain to the unfair competition if 1000 rpm is missing on 488. Be glad Ferrari still managed to build world's best and most exciting turbo charged engine.

It doesn't sound as 458 because it revs only to 8000 and not as 458 up to 9000 rpm. Ferrari was forced by the competition to go turbo. They had the highest hp/L from a NA engine in any sports car but competition kept adding bigger turbos and superchargers. But thankfully Ferrari knows how to set up a turbo engine, by increasing the torque with each gear so it doesn't end up being a race car with full torque at low end, like some cars from other manufacturers.

Vitaly Kutuzov 458 revs to 9000, 488 to 8000. That is the difference. Up to 8000 they both sound the same. That last 1000 rpm is what makes 458 sound special.

+BLT This car has to be driven on roads and streets in cities. XX cars don't. They are track cars with no mufflers. Despite being turbo charged it still sounds great, better than any turbo charged engine out there. More importantly, customers, people who gladly pay and buy this car, they love it. If you're not satisfied with the sound of 488 you can always buy a Lambo or something else. Happily there are many options these days. The complaints on internet about these kind of cars usually comes from people who never even get close to one, unless by chance. You should hear this car next to your old 458 before you diss it :)
