When Dr. King states that the black population of his time being 11% of the population, and that violence is impractical, I wonder if he means a full-blown all-out war, entailing a Marxian takeover is impractical. Insofar as he did not approve of Marxism due to its totalitarian tendencies, perhaps that is the reason he turned to non-violence and believed armed self-defense was circumstantially necessary. Otherwise it goes to show that the term "violence" is pretty vague.
