  2. The shuttle test flights (first 4 missions with only two crew) had ejection seats. It was impractical to have seven ejection seats due to the two deck design (4 on upper deck, 3 on lower deck) and the need to “tear down” the seats while in orbit in order to provide sufficient work space. The Russians designed and tested the K-36RB seat from a Progress rocket at around Mach 4.1 at I believe 100,000 feet with fairy good success.
