My Grandmother used to make a soup she called Poor man's Soup. The recipe was handed down from her mother and her mother before her. Potatoes, an onion, some milk for a broth and lots of pepper. If you have it, a bit of bacon for extra flavour. It was so good on cold winter days. 😋

That looks amazing! I know your vignettes are about life in 1820 but so much resembles my families life in the 1970s. They lived in the mountains of my province and most of them used wood burning cook stoves well into the late 1970s, had wells and a bucket in the corner of the kitchen for pig slops lol. My great grandmother passed in 87 and used a wood burning cook stove the whole time. I still remember the smell of lye soap , using a dipper at the bucket for a drink and the scent of supper cooking while the fire crackled . Feeding my Great Aunties chickens earned a kid a visit to her huge pantry for a molasses or ginger cookie. If she was pleased with us (if we brought in wood for the stove lol) we got 2 cookies! Auntie was considered posh. She had a grand house with 2 floors, a dining room and TWO outhouses! Lmao.

So exciting about Ron's Dad! Whenever I screw up an omelette while trying to flip it, I just stir it all up in the pan and say - scrambled eggs! I meant to do that!

Those look amazing! I think the mini iron is what was called a patty pan. Little girls often had tiny pans called Patty Pans in different shapes so they might bake along side their mother.

We make an old old recipe here in my part of Canada called Blueberry Grunt. Its made with baking powder dumplings baked with fresh blueberries, sugar and cinnamon . Served hot with vanilla icecream. It got its name because its so good you grunt when you eat it!

35
Ohhh $4000 was more than many earned in 2 lifetimes back then! Poor Justine though lol, when Ben and Lucy were fighting she was all .. awkward! 🤣
34
Bees wax candles smell amazing too!
31
Salt cod cakes! This is a very common supper here! The only difference is we mix the egg right in with the potatoes, press them into flat patties and fry them in a skillet. Usually served with baked beans! YUMM!
31
I'm loving so many new, wonderful videos! Bummer about your rabbit, Ron . You will get one next time! Meanwhile , Justine, your pancakes looked amazing. I love molasses! We eat it on hot biscuits and fresh bread here.

@joannelucille lmao when my parents had a home up on the ridge, we were considered posh because our outhouse had two holes!
26

25
just remember - turnips make you poop lol so make sure Ron builds you a good outhouse
24
That looks so lovely and fresh tasting! We have a local delicacy here called Solomon Gundy! at first i thought you meant that but ours is way different lol. Solomon Gundy is chunks of herring and onions put in a jar or crock with pickling spices and left to age in the fridge. Once its, good and mushy, its, served on crackers with sliced onions. Looks awful. Smells terrible. The old timers love it! 😂
24
He is a very fine tin pot!
22

19
hhahaah poor Lucy! Justine and her books are going to kill her one of these days LMAO.
17
haha that makes me So grateful for my Keurig!
17
@EarlyAmerican it would be awesome to get the history on them! I had patty pans as a kiddo. I used them when my Dad was baking to make my own wee cakes. Holy crap i grew up in an era out of time lol. Honestly many women here wore sun bonnets into the 40s! My Dad used to go to market in his neighbours horse drawn wagon on Saturdays in the mid 50s. They would leave at 5 am , drive to the ferry and cross to the city to sell their produce and eggs.
17
hahaaha. We have a cook book here where i live - out of old nova scotia kitchens. In the back are home remedies including one that says eating pumpkin seeds cures bed wetting!
16
@Iflie in 1924 in England, my Grandfather was arrested , tried and sentenced to weekends at the Daykens Boys Home. His crime? He picked an apple from a farmers tree because he was Hungry. He was 14. A few months later, he was conned into going to Canada as a Home Child where he became an indentured servant until he was 18. English laws SUCKED!
16
Your new bedroom is perfect! And your bed is so pretty especially your coverlet. Ron did you build the desk?
15
Potato pancakes! My Dad made these for us at supper all the time while i was growing up! He fried them in the frying pan and we ate them with ketchup. SO GOOD!
15
Added to Justines comment, many people ate a lot of wild meat back in the day as it was basically free. Costing only the price of some string for a snare, some lead to make shot, or hook and line to catch fish. My own family grew up poor in a very rural province in Canada. We ate a lot of wild game including, deer, moose, fish , rabbit. High protein, low cost.
15
Happy Easter!
15
I think we are going to,be treated to an 1820s wedding g video soon!
14
Id be keen to try it! I love trying new foods
14
Imhave been enjoying your videos very much. A book you might like called Out of Old Nova Scotia Kitchens, has recipes handed down through generations dating back to the 1700s! I use several recipes from it and they are delicious!
