Many parents kept their babies in cradĺe until they were 2 and old enough to understand. As an added, sad, tidbit, it was quite common to not name a child until they were 3 yrs old at wich time the family would hold a naming celebration. This was done because most children never lived to 3 and they felt that by not giving their baby a name, they could emotionally distance themselves from baby incase he or she died.
