  1. It was a lot easier to fool people 300 years ago. People were largely uneducated. Even many of the wealthy were basically illiterate. Public records were iffy at best and usually based on church recordings. Someone could (and often did!) Move 100 miles from home and completely rewrite their personal history and never get caught
