  2. Many of them were published under the name Mother Goose who was actually the chief editor of the London newspaper back in the early 1700s. He used them as a sort of 18th century political cartoon to comment on society and world news. For example Humpty Dumpty actually refers to a giant cannon that was so big, it fell apart and nobody could fix it.
