  1. My Grandmother used to make a soup she called Poor man's Soup. The recipe was handed down from her mother and her mother before her. Potatoes, an onion, some milk for a broth and lots of pepper. If you have it, a bit of bacon for extra flavour. It was so good on cold winter days. 😋

  2. That looks amazing! I know your vignettes are about life in 1820 but so much resembles my families life in the 1970s. They lived in the mountains of my province and most of them used wood burning cook stoves well into the late 1970s, had wells and a bucket in the corner of the kitchen for pig slops lol. My great grandmother passed in 87 and used a wood burning cook stove the whole time. I still remember the smell of lye soap , using a dipper at the bucket for a drink and the scent of supper cooking while the fire crackled . Feeding my Great Aunties chickens earned a kid a visit to her huge pantry for a molasses or ginger cookie. If she was pleased with us (if we brought in wood for the stove lol) we got 2 cookies! Auntie was considered posh. She had a grand house with 2 floors, a dining room and TWO outhouses! Lmao.

  3. Last spring, I was diagnosed with Arterial Flutter and severe tachycardia. Medication did little to slow progression and i quickly got to the point my heart was - in the words of my dr- getting tired from being overworked. In July I was hospitalized and received a Cardioversion - a process where your heart is shocked to the point it stops for about 15 seconds then (ideally) starts again in a normal rhythm. My heart surgeon had to shock me 4 times. (apparently this is rare and was a first for her lol)

  4. So exciting about Ron's Dad! Whenever I screw up an omelette while trying to flip it, I just stir it all up in the pan and say - scrambled eggs! I meant to do that!

  9. We make an old old recipe here in my part of Canada called Blueberry Grunt. Its made with baking powder dumplings baked with fresh blueberries, sugar and cinnamon . Served hot with vanilla icecream. It got its name because its so good you grunt when you eat it!

  12. Salt cod cakes! This is a very common supper here! The only difference is we mix the egg right in with the potatoes, press them into flat patties and fry them in a skillet. Usually served with baked beans! YUMM!

  35. That sounds awesome! Here, we have Levees. Parties held at the Legions with rum, baked beans and small cakes and lots of music! They go on all day New Years Day and people typically visit several levees before the day is done.

  55. This was so awesome! I remember when i was i grade 3, (1978) the teacher arranged for us to have a tour of the Halifax Airport. The highlight was the luggage area where suitcases were sorted . The luggage area was located above the terminal so the chutes for the carosuels back then started up near the ceiling . At the end of our tour, each kid was lifted onto the chute and rode it down into the terminal and onto the carousel below. I recall how excited we all were lol.
