We didn't have election in our Legislative Council until 1980s, but the British colonial officers had introduced elections to Urban Council and Regional Council in 1960s, we could vote to elect the respectives in the councils https://youtu.be/4CW2kXCU__U

@davidwong5197 Hong Kong people never asked to leave the British empire, we were happy under British rule and had a very good relationship with the colonial officers. UK has announced that she was willing to let all the colonies had self determination in 1956, all the colonies might go to London to ask for independence after 1956
