For the Americans watching, to get a better understanding of the parties, you have to look at them on a global democratic scale.
In the US, the Progressives would be seen as Center-Right. Corporate Democrats are Right wing. Meanwhile Republicans are so far off the right end of the scale they are clearly in fascist authoritarianism.
In Canada, the Progressive-Conservatives (the Canadian "right wing") are seen as Center-Right on a global scale. The Liberals are Centrist. And the NDP are Center-Left to Left.
For the PC to be able to move left of the Liberals, is honestly pretty sad. But left wing policies work for EVERYONE. They build economies, provide stability, good income, healthcare, rights and freedom, etc.
For much of Canada's history it's been pretty much a two party system with the Liberals on the "left" and PCs on the right. Generally it's been the Liberals get power, do a lot of good, but screw some things up. So everyone complains and votes PC to have the Conservatives "fix things". Which leads to worse economies (not as bad as the recessions Republicans always cause in the US), some worse social policies, the usual... and then everyone votes Liberal again to once again "fix things". Which gets most stuff corrected, but not enough... so then everyone swings back to PC. Back and forth it goes, the country slowly inching worse and worse each time. The NDP is the third wheel that gets some support but not enough to really make the changes that are needed. Kind of like Progressives in the US. They're there and have great policies that EVERYONE benefits from... but because most people are stuck in the two main parties... nothing really changes.
Canada's also got some other parties, like the Bloc Quebecois which basically puts Quebec above the rest of Canada and wants everyone to bow to the French. lol
Or the Green Party, which usually ends up with like 1% of the vote every election.
