  1. Sad truth is there is not enough people who want to use long distance rail service in the U.S. These hobbyist types like Wendover want it but the vast bulk of the traveling public would rather have air service.

  2. There is nothing to stop the government from building dedicated rail passenger lines, well outside of the cost. Rail freight keeps industry working and many shipments are time dependent.

  3. Railroads pay their own way. The government only paid after they ran the railroads into the ground.

  4. There is no great demand for rail passenger service. If railroads could make money offering passenger rail service, they would offer it. Only 1 passenger line makes money in the U.S. at this time and it is because it's a SHORT route high speed service. People do not want to spend days in a rail car. Railroads also run high speed freight services and they do it well. By the way, China runs the most extensive very high speed passenger rail service network in the world and they lose a ton of money on it.
