  1. The average Social Security check is $1,200/month and most people paid into it. $1,200 in this day can hardly be called lavish. Many people who live on Social Security never had those jobs that paid high wages and a banquet table of benefits. In many cases, they never had the talents to get great paying jobs that would allow them to sock away a fortune in a bank for the day they did retire. Republicans should consider Social Security untouchable. When they did have a chance to improve Social Security without the addition of more tax dollars... they completely, totally blew it.
