  2. Ukraine was independent for a few years back in the 1920's and Russia invaded them. A decade later Russia starved huge numbers of Ukrainians to death in order to finance steel mills. Putin may have a fondness for Ukraine but Ukraine isn't that fond of Russia. While Ukrainians were being starved, the N.Y. Times went on about the wonders of the Soviet Union, the worker's paradise.
