Extensive mass transit systems would become unaffordable. They may be hip, they may be hot but cheap they are not.

The United States had a massive mass transit system. People stopped using them. Electric cars are made in the United States. Electric cars would also be subject to the whims of suppliers outside the United States as environmental groups file continual lawsuits that prevent a domestic materials/mineral supplies from being developed.

@joshbobst1629 Owning a car you do pay a premium for convenience. On the other hand, time savings reduce the expense of owning a car. You take a train and get off at your station but then you have to pay to get to your desired final destination. If you take a bus everyday you may be stuck waiting a half hour or an hour everyday because the schedule just doesn't quite work and that is irreplaceable time. And you may have to walk some distance to get to where you really want to go. If you were a real estate agent, you are going to drag a client on the bus to go see every home they wish to look at?

@BRunner12 There is a scheduling advantage as you do not have to wait for a bus or trolley to get to your destination. You may get a better quality of life. For many, the trade offs are worth it. Even in population dense areas mass transit systems lose money. Extending these systems into less population dense areas will make the losses higher yet.

@part-of-juffo-wup The suburbs were designed to not repeat the mistakes of the cities.

@jeffthompson1869 Actually, there have been attempts to increase production of batteries for autos and other applications. Environmental lawsuits in part have stopped opening up mines and other sort of minerals needed for batteries. By doing this, the United States is left exposed to fluctuations in price and availability of materials like Lithium. Just like with oil. Several countries want to form cartels for these minerals to control both supply and price. Just like with oil. Kinda makes you go hmmmmm....

@kevinstfort People did like going when they wanted and leave when they wanted, not being tied down to routes and schedules. Maybe one of the prime causes was people found automobiles more convenient? Where I grew up was a suburb of New York and there were several rail lines to serve the area from the 1840's on.

Starting next month for me, 30% increase. I must live in the lucky part of the state.
