The cost of rent, food and fuel probably only allow many people to buy the basics and they have to skip the frills. The frills are an important part of the economy and employers probably hired in advance of the recovery to be prepared for the return of business. But business for them never returned, so they have to let go of these recent hires.

I think even if the job pays $15 hour, living expenses have become high so you are effectively working for nothing.

@Brett If you do some calculation $15/hr may not pay your rent in many areas of the country. Effectively you work a month just to pay a month's rent. You still have food, insurances, auto upkeep to have done. Keep in mind the $15/hr movement started because people could no longer afford rent on the then current lower pay scales. Future opportunities are all well and fine but unless you live with your parents, you will spend a huge amount of your life just trying to stay just above water. Rent use to come in about to 25% of your salary.
