Central and South America have been independent about as long as the United States has been yet they have a 200 year history of social chaos and instability that continually retards their development.

  7.  @yongy2000  Corporations formed with private investment are private property with property ownership spread among several owners, much like co-op apartments are. In China, if you are with the right "in" group, you get power, just like the U.S. Unlike China, in the U.S. those in the "out" group get to exist relatively unmolested. They just may not get the juicy, juicy contracts. Jack Ma found out if not with the "in" group, it is best to keep your mouth shut in public and be very guarded in private.

  8. I have an ancient air conditioner that still runs. I has Freon refrigerant in it and produces a cool like none of the new varieties can. You don't feel clammy, you feel cool. During summer, the most valuable thing I own.

  9.  @Bremberry  I also have a fancy new high efficiency with the correct refrigerant and it runs neither as cool nor more efficient than my old clunker (which was a very early model high efficiency unit but same rating). I'm willing to risk a little global disaster for being cool on the relatively few days I use A.C.

  18. If the farmers want the best price for their crop.... they are being capitalists. The price of coffee is low because there is so much of it. Fair Trade supposedly pays a premium for better grades off coffee. Capitalism working for the farmers. In your socialist world, the government sets the price and that is the end of it.

  21. Multiculturalism and diversity was a hobby with the well to do Left and Liberals. If you grow up in a comfortable middle class portion of society, you probably have never been scratched by the rough edges of society. Russia is nobody's friend, at best maybe a convenient relationship.

  22.  @generalripper7528  Afro-Americans were free in the North. The United States had Jews and nationalities from all parts of Europe and the "Native" Americans also were part of society. You did have free born blacks and blacks who had slaves and American Indians that had slaves. You had a real mix. Even in it's colonial state the U.S. had all kinds of people wandering around with all kinds of social status.
