In the biography Titan the author was allowed to go through many of the papers J.D. left behind and he was quite surprised to find that nothing Rockefeller dreaded more was telling employees he couldn't afford to pay them this week. Oil was a real boom-bust industry with crashes occurring quite often leaving many oil companies short of cash. One thing that drove Rockefeller was when payday came, the employees received their wage.

  2. Rockefeller could play pretty rough if he had to but would always attempt to strike a deal with the companies he was after. Many who had taken stock in Standard Oil instead of a cash buy out became millionaires and he helped create quite a few of them.
