  1. The U.S. electoral system was designed to force presidential candidates to travel the country and campaign in every state. They couldn't just run in a few heavily populated states, they would have to go into smaller population states and campaign there as well. In virtually all elections the winning candidate reflected the popular vote. All other offices are direct vote, from local dog catcher to Senators.
