  1. Western clothing is useful because it is safer around industrial machinery. When Japan modernized, women would work in the mills and suffer injury as their robes got caught in moving parts. Plus western clothing enhances the appearance by forcing the eye to look at the person, not the clothing. If you look at the cut of her outfit, your eyes are directed to watch Liu Xin, not her clothing.
