  1. Golstein has a memory failure. How many times has the Soviet Union/Russia attacked their neighbors since 1900? Countries like Poland want NATO because Poland has few good memories of Russia (who dismembered their nation not once, but twice). Russians aren't worried about the Russians in Ukraine. When it suited Russia, they eliminated millions of their own. What Putin wants is a restoration of the pre-1990 borders. Europe hasn't learned the lessons of war, you do not win by defending your nation. And for the United States, the last thing it needs is another major war to save Europe from itself (think World War 1 & 2).
