What affected Cuba's development was Fidel Castro. Cuba had a growing economy until Fidel came into power to help the people. The success of the Cuban people in the United States shows Cuba never lacked the talent, more like Castro wouldn't allow them to use their talent.

@theaconite1400 Cuba has trade with other countries. Cubans in the United States are allowed to send money to Cuba and some goods are sold to the United States. The embargo is not absolute. Maybe the problem was the Castro brothers? Just maybe? Blaming Batista at this point is ridiculous, the Castros have run Cuba for over 60 years now. Japan went from a feudal state to an industrial power in just 40 years.

@ensteffo The Cuban government does reforms and a few years later starts doing un-reforms. This take one step forward and then two steps back approach defeats any advancement in economic development. Various countries have tried to provide aid and help to get the Cuban economy going but the government ends up defeating any improvement. The embargo is not absolute and money and investment does happen. Cuba just has to settle the issues between the U.S. and Cuba, allow people to make money without the usual pile of restrictions and Cuba will do just fine. The sad, simple truth is the government doesn't want to give people any choice in their lives. The only choice most have is to flee the country.
