  1. I love animals and I still support animal research. I can understand why people feel sorry for the lab animals but unfortunately it is very naive to not understand how it is absolutely necessary in order to bring new, life saving medications to the market. No disrespect, I know it comes from the heart, but it is naive. There are extremely rigid and ethical guidelines regarding conducting studies using animals (as well as humans). Millions of dollars are poured into research, and years of work required to even bring it to animal testing; animals are not just tortured and discarded like trash. Each contributes to the advancement of science. Animal laboratories are inspected and employees are educated annually (and tested) regarding their current knowledge regarding appropriate animal care and following protocols designed into each study which is approved by a board called the IRB. The IRB will reject studies that unnecessarily torture animals-people outside of medicine have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. I spoil all of my personal animals to a ridiculous extent like a lot of other animal lovers do, but people need to understand animal testing is avoided at all costs due to the extreme expense of conducting such research. It is not done to simply give a bunch of horrible human beings an opportunity to legally torture animals. That is a ridiculous accusation and as much as people would like to protest, like others mentioned in this thread-look in the mirror first. What do you consume that isn’t ethically sourced? Research is strictly monitored and has ethical treatment of animals factored into any study that is awarded approval from the IRB. Slaughter houses and factory farm raised animals are under far less scrutiny than laboratory research animals. There are not enough inspectors to even put a dent into the animal welfare violations that occur, even in the most compliant of facilities. The employees working there often work in extreme and dangerous conditions themselves. And yet I consume meat, so in essence I too am a hypocrite.
