My instructor in my first year of college turned me on to The Cry and the Covenant, detailing the struggles of Semmelweis pointing to a rational explanation of "puerperal fever ", as the result of sloppy surgeons. She also told us about John Beard and the trophoblastic property of cancers. Those were eye opening days.
