We were told a story by an alcoholic cook at a pizza restaurant and bar in Portland once, in return for a couple of shots of scotch . . after he heard us talking about the movie Tombstone around a pool table. I'm sure none of us knew about Valdosta, but he did, as that's where he was from, and he told us it was well known why Doc was sent off to dental school, and it wasn't to further his education.
He was doing a chore for his "pa" taking an ox and wagon to the "crick" to water them when three red legs came out of the trees and said to him, "boy, we need that ox, an yer wagon", cus se aint et fer some days. We're gonna roast that ox over the firewood you done rolled down hyar"
And the chef went on telling us that young Doc said:
"No sir, you sure are not. This here's my daddy's ox and wagon!"
Whereupon as the ted legs smirked and made at him, young Doc grabbed the Walker colt .44 from inside the oxcart, and shot all three red legs each right between the eyes.
We had no idea as to the veracity of the obviously Southern, and alcoholic chef or not -- who seemed terrified of his boss -- a lovely voluptuous Italian lady who owned the place -- but he git his two shots and went back to the kitchen, and we were highly intrigued, if somewhat dubious. But that's what he said. Only later did I learn Valdosta was indeed the place of Holliday's roots.
I've often wondered about his tale.
