@andrewferg8737 "The Bible, rightly understood, is descriptive, rather than prescriptive. " This goes against what the church as been telling us. There are numerous commands within the bible. We are told to look to the bible for instructions. We are told that our laws are based on the bible... " God destroyed the people during the flood because they had filled the Earth with violence" the god of the bible...who is omniscient...and omnipotent... screwed up his first attempts at humans.... and his fix for this was to...drown the world... killing them and all the animals. These are not the actions of a god who is omniscient...and omnipotent... As for being against slavery... when it contains commands for slavery.. including how badly you can beat your slave..then it is not against slavery at all.

@andrewferg8737 That isn't much of a response? Do you have anything to add to that?

@andrewferg8737 "The question of slavery is a rephrasing of the classic "problem of evil"" Perhaps but there is more to it than that I think. The god of the bible was against murder (except when he did it or encouraged it) .... he was against stealing... he was against eating shellfish.... slavery though - no problem. You can even beat your slave a little if you want. This undermines the idea that the bible was authored/inspired by a benevolent, omniscient creator and that it is a useful source for morality.

" Most of the "Commandments" in the Old Testament where thought up by men who were trying to fulfill God's commandment to have law" You're undermining the whole old testament. ...and are in contradiction to a lot of theists who think it is the direct word of god.

@makersmark5607 "Lots of people have lots of contradicting opinions" Including the authors of the old and new testament. " Undermining the whole old testament? Not really. But yea that's what the Jews think as well. " I'm not talking about Jews... I'm talking about your statements. You're explaining that the bible isn't gods word....it's just the opinion of some guys who were following him back then. That certainly undermines the authority of the bible. "But once you understand that the intention is to have separation between Church / State / Industry it doesn't really conflict. " That doesn't explain the contradictions in any way.... at all..
