  2. Redwood is not a 'hardwood' but has many characteristics that make it an ideal material for construction in hostile environments. But the piles may indeed have been fir. Either way the amount of material used to negotiate the shortcut, it's failings and successes are the machinations of Capitalism over Environmentalism.​ @robdeaton9910
