  1. It's hard for some people, and I've come to the conclusion it starts when you have a difficult connection with your father - in the Western world, at least. There are some entire cultures that make minimal eye contact, such as Japan and Australian Aboriginals. Anyone with this issue would have an easier time being in cultures where that's considered normal.
