  1. It should be noted, your story says 84% of new homes are in HOA's. This seems to imply that most people want them. This isn't true. In many areas, local government REQUIRE builders to establish HOA's. This is to remove the burden of code enforcement from the government.

  2. HOA's should not be allowed to restrict activities, only the physical appearance of the property. HOA's were established to ensure the property values of a neighborhood would not be negatively affected by one individual. The appearance of a property can negatively affect the value of neighboring properties. Activities, being temporary in nature, do not. Me changing my oil or having a yard sale isn't going to affect anyone's property value in a lasting way.
