@williamegler8771 What's the rev limit on most econoboxes? Not 9k. How hard do they get driven on a daily basis?
18
IMO, Their lack of torque makes them not so great street cars. That being said, I've built two into SCCA championship winning race cars for Steve Zink. We also built one for his daughter, Nikki. He's actually set a few lap records for the class faster than what he's actually in. Their high revving nature makes them great track cars. They can hold a gear longer which means you don't have to upshift mid-corner, helping with stability. I wouldn't mind owning an R3 version.

@sandervanderkammen9230 RX8 is not a sedan.
6
Yep. The auto cars had a 4 port engine, the manuals had 6 ports.
5
@6:20... That's not where the front seat was when you were driving. Put the front seat in a position for anyone over 5' 9" and the back seat passengers better be double amputees and there's zero leg room. @10:30... You can use a Sohn adapter or you can do like we do in the race cars and run premix in your gas, just like a 2-stroke engine. We eliminate the oil injection completely. This allows us to control the oil ratio.
5
They're supposed to consume oil. The engine actually has oil injectors. Perhaps he should have read the owner's manual.
5
@solocamo3654 Well yeah, a newer car might beat it. A Miata of the same year won't. Even track prepped. If they bring the rotary back, it'll dominate on the track again.
5
@palebeachbum Seriously? They have oil injectors. These injector spray oil into the combustion chamber. If you're gonna comment, make sure you know something about the car you're commenting on.
5
@williamegler8771 It is. It's the nature of the engine. It make NO torque down low, so it spends most of it's life in the upper rev range. You've obviously never driven one. They don't just want to be revved, they demand it. It redlines at 9k.

@sandervanderkammen9230 By what definition? It's either a coupe or a 2+2.
4
@sandervanderkammen9230 Your definition isn't THE definition.
4
@sandervanderkammen9230 You should tell BMW and Mercedes, who've been selling 4 door coupes for over a decade.
4
@sandervanderkammen9230 Direct quote from Mercedes website, "Mercedes-Benz luxury coupes are designed to invigorate and inspire. Whether it’s a 2-door or 4-door, every model offers premium styling and technology, as well as an AMG variant for an added burst of power. From the sleek CLA to the fearless GT, they’re perfectly tailored, seductively shaped and supremely appointed. The result is a selection of coupes that turn heads as well as they turn corners." I'll take their word over yours.

@bldontmatter5319 Performance cars are built to go fast, not last long. Like you said, built for the application.
4
@solocamo3654 It's not all about HP when building a race car. I've built two SCCA championship winning cars for Steve Zink. He's set lap records in them for the class faster than his. Like I said in my comment... Not great street cars, but great on the track.
4
@TassieLorenzo HP isn't what accelerates a car. HP is just a number used to represent the amount of work done over time. Torque is was does the work. That's why HP is calculated using a formula of torque and rpm. But none of that has anything to do with the point I was making though. I was referring to the importance of light weight and chassis balance, which is where the RX8 shines.
4
@TassieLorenzo You disproved yourself in your own diatribe. You said torque to the wheels can be changed with gearing. You then said you can use a low torque engine to get the same acceleration as a high torque engine by changing the gearing. You see where I'm going here? By changing the gearing, you're increasing the amount of torque going to the wheels... Because torque is what accelerates the vehicle. HP = Tq x RPM/5252. Power = Work x Time. HP is the measure of work done over a period of time.
4
@bldontmatter5319 I'm sure they're glad they never met you either.
3
@solocamo3654 Again, maybe at a stoplight drag race, but not on the track. The NC Miata is not a great track car. Not like the RX-8. There's a reason you see a lot of RX-8's on the track and not a lot of NC Miatas. NB Miatas and ND Miatas make great track cars.
3
@TassieLorenzo You're typing these big stories (or more likely copy/pasting, since it seems you don't understand what you're saying), like you understand physics, but you don't. Nothing you're saying is correct. I'm not going to explain everything, you clearly have waaaay more free time than I do. But jet engines do make make torque. If it makes HP. it makes torque. Do you think electric motors don't make torque?
2
@infernoking7504 It's a zero stroke engine that burns oil.
1
@TassieLorenzo The Type-R may be based on an econobox, but it wasn't built to be one. The base model Civic would be an econobox.
1
@TassieLorenzo Really, with the magical no torque jet engine again? If a turbine make no torque, how does it rotate the driveshaft in a helicopter or tank?
