These rental services want to be able to charge for the "service" of connecting renters with people who have cars but want to claim no responsibility for the actual transaction. It's a brilliant business model. You get to charge for a service, but when something goes wrong you get to say, "not our problem, it's between the renter and the car owner". The reason why she couldn't get anyone to help her is because the people running the service are probably a third party call/response center in India. The people who own Getaround are probably just collecting monthly checks and have no involvement in running the company.
