  1. Yrs ago, w more baby boomers than jobs, companies tried to make employees independent contractors, especially in sales jobs from phone salès to teaching dance classes. It didnt work bc the workers didnt get enough money to afford their jobs. If you cant afford your job, leave the bldg. Jobs are supposed to support YOU as well as making the company prosperous. On the other hand, if you agree to a salaried position, put in your 40 hrs and go home. Salaried positions are structured expecting you to get the work done in the 40 hr week. The extra hrs are often due to the worker seeing more work that needs to be done and takes it on. A mgr has a salaried job bc it is assumed that a mgr is competent at managing the workers as well as the work load. If there is more work and a short staff, it is time to consult w the boss. If the work isnt getting done in a timely manner bc of an incompetent worker, it is up to the mgr to determine the problem and address it. If the mgr needs to be doing staff work, the company needs another staffer not a longer working mgr who isn't doing mgmt tasks.
