  1. China has a strategic aversion to countries being torn apart because people are trying to do that to China. They also have sympathy to being surrounded by potentially hostile western allies, which is also happening to them. Whichever side they take is a compromise of their position. It's a bit of a lose-lose situation for them and they are going to come off as hypocrites either way, and they understand this. What's best for China is for nothing to happen, but that's kind of out the window now. The good news for China is that all parties in this mess are hypocrites, so their comparative standing among great powers shouldn't fall much.
