  1. Kevin Rudd's description of the Chinese economic motivators is only partially correct in my opinion. In the spirit of tortured analogies I'd suggest that the whole economy is a bit like an American football team where the private sector is the offensive squad and the public sector is the defense. While growth from private sector is certainly the main contributor towards economic prosperity in China, public sector institutions and enterprises have provided the economy's protections during the 1997 and 2008 economic crises as well as the current pandemic response. China's got a strong balanced team which makes and keeps them competitive, even in a really high-powered division. So while the private sector may be largely responsible for the high score, it's important to remember that offense wins games but defense wins championships.
