It's telling that South Korea is not part of this semi-alliance. Confidence that the future in the region can be in opposition to China is waning. East Asian countries don't want to have to choose, and most of them are not going to.

Westerners are becoming more and more prone to naval gazing. We describe ourselves as the world and dismiss everyone that doesn't recognize us as that. Most of the actual world isn't interested in siding with "the world" against China. If we boycott the Olympics, the rest of the world will shake its collective head and go compete. Because it's the winter Olympics whose sports are dominated by rich countries, it may have a little bit more of an effect than if it were a summer games, but the real loser won't be China. It will be the Olympics themselves, at exactly the moment that the Olympics need to succeed. As for the microchips, Ian's right. China isn't going to war over microchips. China will pour massive investment into chip technology and in five to ten years they'll be producing chips that are competitive with the best in the world.

No disrespect intended, but Russia is unreliable. I'm not saying this to crap on Russia. It's just that their interests are complicated.

You are wrong. China has no designs on the Philippines. They do want control of the waters west of the Philippines because of the trade routes and their proximity to the choke point at Malacca, but not the islands themselves. Taiwan is different. The Chinese, and by this I mean pretty much all Chinese, view Taiwan as part of China, and view Taiwan's de facto independence as a national insult. China won't attack unless it is sure they can win (2035-2049).
