  1. The Chinese have already faced that demon. China has been reluctant to give Russia full-throated support on their actions creating independent enclaves inside the borders of other countries for that very reason. But in the last few years it appears that China sees encirclement as enough of a common threat to warrant tacit support of Russian moves despite the optical hypocrisy.

  2. I sympathize with both China's and Russia's security concerns. However, they are both keen to establish and defend hegemony in their respective regions. In fact their only real point of contention is how to divide their hegemonic influence in central Asia.

  3.  @godzillamothra5983  There is a degree of hypocrisy because Russia is supporting separatist movements in Ukraine and Georgia while China is itself suppressing separatist movements in its own territory and generally opposes separatism everywhere such as the Catalonian separatists in Spain. Russia has put China in an uncomfortable spot on this issue, but they have a common grievance when it comes to encirclement which seems to be emerging as the overriding concern in their collective eyes. When you play high-stakes diplomacy, it's pretty much impossible to avoid all instances of hypocrisy.
