China has been politically ambivalent on the war since its inception. China had, and still has, close relations with both countries, and it has political ideals contradicted by both sides. China is in agreement with Russia that the United States and her allies cannot be allowed to continuously encroach into the historical spheres of influence of other regional hegemons like themselves. In fact, they intend to see the encroachments of the last two centuries rolled back later in this century. But they also don't approve of the carving up of other states and claiming that those living within a controversial region should have the right to separate themselves from the state to which they belong. China is having to straddle an ideological paradox here, and the sooner it ends without the total collapse of either state, the better.

@Baz.007 Russia doesn't really need Chinese arms. They have a highly functional arms manufacturing industry that can match the NATO contributions at least to the extant that Ukraine can man them. If NATO brings troops in, that would be a different story.
