@gameslane4908 We owe Washington for the precedent of leaving office before he died. We owe Adams for the precedent of admitting defeat, not challenging the results, and stepping down without making a scene. It's a highly underappreciated precedent, but it has a lot of influence on the survival of our system. I really don't think that we would have seen that level of magnanimity (albeit begrudged magnanimity) from either Jefferson or Hamilton had they lost a presidential election while in office. If not for the precedents set by Washington and Adams, we might very well have had the kinds of disputed elections, bloodshed, and chaos that you see in so many young democracies today.
