To the contrary—the terms aren't even opposite. Conservative means appreciative of traditional institutions while liberal means allowed to function with little or no government interference. We've twisted the terms to the point of absurdity in the United States. The dichotomy was established in British politics where old-money conservatives (the manor-born aristocracy) competed with new-money liberals (industrialists) for power in parliament in the nineteenth century.

@nobodyherepal3292 China's sanctioned right now. China would still be able to trade throughout Asia. They might lose trading ability with the United States, Japan and Western Europe, but for how long? Russia's under sanctions for taken back Crimea, it seems survivable.

I really don't see South Korea, the Philippines or Vietnam rushing out to support Taiwan in the event that China decides to advance. That said, U.S. support alone is pretty effective and probably enough to thwart a Chinese initiative for the next five years or so.

Whichever side the military goes with will win. The military will go with whichever side did not attack the government.

@disillusionedrightest7313 Those mass-defecting will not have control of the hardware. Nor will they be nearly as well organized. Soldiers will obey orders, and sailors even more so because they're stuck on that ship and can't run away very easily. They may sympathize with one side or the other, but their not going to spontaneously start shooting their platoon members.
