3:25 "Never before has China been so authoritarian." Seriously? Do you know any Chinese history?

@annan7728 Yeah, I miss the days when Deutsche Welle could be counted on to do thorough and fair-minded expositions. These last few years it seems like they're all about hit pieces.

The Romans spent their days watching people kill each other. Being an artist is great if you believe that people appreciate your art, otherwise it's horribly depressing. There's going to be some good coming out of this for people who feel shackled to their jobs right now, but there is also going to be a lot of disillusionment and probably a lot of corresponding chaos, violence and self-destructive behavior.

In the long run I think this is the best solution. If we don't wish to embrace obsolescence then we are going to have to become machines ourselves.

kuiousitykat - except that because machines are more efficient owners than people…

Germany and China are two of the most highly productive locations on the planet and they both have huge market potential. The countries along this route will have a huge opportunity to access these markets, but they're really going to have to work hard to compete with the endpoints.

Why is China an existential threat to freedom? Because it's successful at bringing it's people from poverty to prosperity? China doesn't try to push their system on anybody. If people give up their freedom to emulate China, it's because their freedoms have failed them. Let China be China, and be happy to be yourself.

@johnnyjohn5440 How far in the past are you talking about. The first fifty years of the People's Republic were every bit as authoritarian as today's China, and that was only thirty-five years ago.

@g8620784 - Yeah, Samarkand in the east of Uzbekistan to Istanbul in the west of Turkey—they skipped half the Silk Road.
