In 1998 nobody was saying China was going to become the next superpower in just a few years. In fact, an awful lot of westerners were sure that China was on the verge of collapse, especially after having devoted so much capital and resources to stemming the "Asian Flu" economic meltdown, and even China's supporters were talking about decades before China became a player of any consequence outside of its backyard. China's economic progress has been unparalleled since, their military is growing and modernizing and their forays into global leadership and institution building are becoming ever more confident. They're still a fair distance from the position the United States holds as a global superpower and probably will be for a few decades but outside of the U.S. they really have no real competition.
