I think the reason there is so much vitriol towards vegans from those of us who dearly love meat and seafood is based on fear and resentment. We're afraid of being labeled as evil; we recognize that animal suffering and death are requisite in our diet and we're worried that at some point someone is going to try to force us to eliminate the part of our diet that we enjoy the most. We also resent the way we perceive, rightly or wrongly, that vegetarians and vegans feel like they are morally superior to those that eat meat and use animal products. For the most part people who choose a restricted diet are rarely pushy about it, but as this comment section shows, many are very touchy about any criticism of the merits of their choice. Most people who have not chosen a restricted diet don't really care that much about those who do, but will get annoyed if they have to make special arrangements for somebody's diet especially if it's by choice. And of course there are people who are just jerks and will attack anyone who they can because they enjoy the feeling of belittling someone they disagree with. Unfortunately I sometimes fall into that category myself especially if I think somebody is making a stand merely because it's trendy. Off the subject, I know vegans don't do leather, how do they feel about the use of silk?
