Belisaurius 533 The United States in particular has proven very clumsy in its response to international crises in the recent past. Some of this is because action by members of one of the main political parties is always stymied by the other. The distrust of government by one particular half of society, and the distrust of leadership by which ever half of society is not in position, has left American leaders unable to mobilize society to deal with these problems. It also doesn't help that the recent leadership in the United States is categorically unqualified to lead, and categorically uninterested in the welfare of our people. The future of the United States is in the hands of the American people. Whether we succeed moving forward or fail is entirely up to us. But our decisions as a people over the last few years suggest that we are unwilling to make the kind of decisions necessary to remain credible world leaders in the absence of overwhelming military superiority. If we continue to tear ourselves apart, to blame others for our failures, to insist that everyone mimic us and then selectively attempt to undermine the sovereign integrity of those who choose not to, then we will decline precipitously. That doesn't mean we will change our form of government, in fact it's a strong sign that we refuse to change our form of government. It just means that our power and influence will fade relative to others.

@rosebud4387 The American people have created these politicians. Americans elect people who tell them what they want to hear over those who tell them the truth. Many of our politicians are untrustworthy, because that's what it takes to win in our system with an undereducated electorate. I've come to the conclusion that all media report selectively. That's part of the reason that our electorate is so woefully misinformed—that and these bias conformation algorithms that reinforce these ridiculous conspiracy theories.

@rosebud4387 You're epitomizing our biggest failing. The American people refuse to take responsibility to govern well. We instead blame it on the media, or corrupt politicians, or Big Whatever, or the deep state, or Russia, or China—anyone but the man in the mirror. We live in a democracy, whether we want to or not. That comes with responsibility, responsibility to make well-informed mature decisions, responsibility that we refuse to take because it's not fun or easy or exciting, and sometimes it requires personal sacrifice.
