@DS87 It happened before in Ukraine. Three months before a national election the president of Ukraine was driven out of the country by West supported demonstrators in 2014.

@DS87 I'm not sure Ukraine could be neutral, though it was probably their best shot at peace. With Russia having taken Crimea (referendum not withstanding) and supporting separatists in the east, I don't know that neutrality was politically possible. If he had offered neutrality to Russia, he might have been forced out of office. In fact, I think it likely.

Ukraine sits between Russia and NATO. I don't know how they can avoid being a pawn for one side or the other accept to be absorbed by one side or the other. They were trying to get into NATO so that they could have security, but it became obvious eight years ago that Russia was not going to let that happen.
