  1. As an American I think self-reflection is one of our weak points. We get politically entrenched into the ideology of one political faction or another and we refuse to see any realities that we don't like, and consequently we fail to learn from our mistakes. Right now we're dealing with the kind of gun violence that no other developed nation sees. We've known that changes are necessary since the Columbine incident in 1999, but we fail over and over to make those necessary changes because of our political animosity with ourselves. In the rare instances that both sides of the political spectrum identify the same problem, there is no agreement on how to deal with it. The one exception seems to be an agreement that the solution to dealing with our collapsing living standards is to blame China for all of our economic failings. This, of course, is a textbook example of a failure to self-reflect.
